Things to see in Trapani

If you can tear yourself away from relaxing at your villa, there are many lovely things to see! With its cathedral, churches and museums, you can have amazing cultural experiences in Trapani. We recommend visit the churches, and also Mozia and the Pepoli museum!

Chiesa delle Anime del Purgatorio

This wonderful church is home to the 20 wooden statues depicting the Passion of Christ. Truly evocative and worth visiting!

Mozia

Visit Mozia, an island covered in ancient ruins offering a glimpse into the Carthaginian settlement that was once so important here.

Trapani Cathedral

Dedicated to San Lorenzo, the cathedral is a wonderful building with a characteristic Baroque facade.

Pepoli Regional Museum

A good regional museum showcasing archaeological artefacts as well as a lovely collection of local coral and traditional art.

Elymians

Trapani is an ancient settlement, and was originally founded by the Elymians, one of Sicily's three native ancient tribes.

Cous Cous

As in all west Sicily, cous cous is a culinary highlight in Trapani. This north African dish is a symbol of the area and is utterly delicious.

Demeter

Legend has it that Trapani was created when Demeter dropped her sickle from above whilst searching for her daughter Persephone!

Flamingoes

Flamingoes can often be seen in the salt pans between Trapani and Marsala! They come here to rest during their annual migration.

The water surrounding the Aegadian Islands are a treasure trove for marine life. It's a popular destination for divers with its pure water and wonderful sights.

Take a break from the heat of the town in this pretty communal garden. Stroll around the pretty surroundings, enjoying the shade provided by the large trees.

Passeggiata

The historic centre of Trapani has a lovely pedestrianised area which is perfect for an evening stroll. Take in the sea views and watch the locals relax every evening.

The Mysteries of Trapani

A procession of 20 statues depicting the Passion of Christ takes place every year on Good Friday. It goes on for around 16 hours, and is a solemn, beautiful event.

Pesto Trapanese – a pasta sauce made with fresh tomatoes, garlic and almonds – is a must when visiting Trapani. Traditionally served with fresh pasta. Delicious!
